What color are you? Did you have a defining moment?

June 15, 2020

What a strange set of circumstances has awakened a part of my brain that has been resting for many many years.
Yes, its “Black Lives Matter.”—for the record–all lives matter–but this brought out the issue of skin color.

Can you remember when you learned that your color had an affect on what you could do etc.etc……
Im white, had never given it a thought–grew up in Denver–head boy in high school black-head girl white.
After high school, I attended the University of Texas- en route, had a stop in the Dallas Train Station.
I went to the waiting room—thought it looked a little shabby–but the thought passed.
I became thirsty and went to the drinking fountain–as I bent over–someone put their hand on my back and said
“you are white–you CANNOT DRINK HERE__GO TO THE WHITE WAITING RROM!!!!!”
And so I went–shocked and still feel the hand on my back!

At the University I became very active—I was in an honorary group called-(if you can believe it “SPOOKS”)-when I arrived it wasnt integrated but when I left it was–the dorms took longer–but that was the start… And ,yes as I write this I can still feel the hand on my back and pain in my heart… to be continued…………
.and guess what –the name was changed in 1993. Texas Spirits
